Accountability does it count if you’re Councillor Colin Barrow?

At the end of May the leader of Westminster City Council Colin Barrow sought to fight off any possible future criticism of the Councils expenditure relating to Councillors benefits by sending in a letter to the West End Extra titled ‘Our duty is to ensure every penny counts’. In his letter he says “at Westminster we are more than prepared to be completely open about councillors’ expenses” really, why if he is open and honest does he ignore questions put to him in emails about his other perks?

It seems Nutsville are not the only ones who are sceptical about Barrows further claims in his letter that “A total of just over £870 was claimed last year, an average of just over £14 per councillor. Some members including myself have chosen to forego claiming expenses altogether.” A member of the ToryTax forum asked through an FOI question what expenses [sic] had Councillor Barrow, Councillor Caplan and Councillor Chalkley been claiming for the last six years. According to Westminster City Council, fat cat Barrow took a staggering £47889.55 in expenses [sic] for the 2008/09 financial year. That’s a big difference from Barrows claim that only £870 was claimed in total by all Westminster Councillors.

Blimey Colin did your moat spring a leak, or perhaps the duck island sunk.

We have always been told by Westminster City Council that the tax to park a bike on Westminster’s streets never made a penny profit. The councillors have always been very particular in their choice of words. Never using the ‘profit’ word, but rather they say ‘surplus’. Apparently surplus is not the same as profit in council speak.

As the Council are so particular in their choice of words when vomiting up their spin to anyone who cares to listen to them, who is telling the truth? Have Westminster City Council published erroneous and false information in a view to misleading the public, or has Colin Barrow, they can’t both be right?

Of course if Barrow had been more direct and open in his letter instead of trotting out the usual spin he might not look so stupid as he does now. Don’t try to spin the public by suggesting you are a philanthropist and claim no expenses/allowances, you do very well out of Westminster City Council. Do you think we would have much difficulty finding a Londoner to do your job for £47889.55 with a free parking permit, theatre tickets and lunches thrown in. Even a London tube driver would be tempted to switch jobs with Barrow. That’s a hell of a lot more than two Starbucks cups of coffee per week.

What a leader he’s turned out to be, in court one week, an FOI team breaking the law to avoid answering questions about his liquidated company, what will come out about you next Barrow?

Scrap the tax Barrow!

The longer Barrow and Chalkley take to scrap the bike parking tax, the more we will find out about them! Sounds like we are prepared to dig in this council’s affairs very deeply.

Barrow is just as bad as all the others when it comes to using spin. Mind you though, he and his mates are beginning to look more and more untrustworthy so it’s not a surprise the smoke screens are coming up.

I’m quite looking forward to the next missive from Bullshit Barrow.
